Many women claim to get menstruation even though they are undergoing pregnancy. The question is, how can a woman menstruate but become pregnant?
Scientifically, menstruation during pregnancy is not possible. Indeed there are some pregnant women who complain that their sex organs regularly bleed like they are having menstruation. But actually, bleeding during menstruation and bleeding that occurs during pregnancy are two different conditions.
Generally, the menstrual process occurs when a thick layer and rich in blood content that is prepared for the egg, released by the body. This thick layer is usually called the endometrium or uterine lining.
The release itself is done when the egg is not fertilized by sperm. If fertilization occurs or in other words pregnancy occurs, then the blood layer will be maintained to support fetal growth.
Why can you bleed while pregnant?
Bleeding during pregnancy is a common condition affecting pregnant women. About 2 in 10 women are reported to have bleeding from the vagina while being pregnant. Usually this happens during the first trimester of pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can be caused by many factors. Bleeding can occur as a result of something serious, but it can also be a normal thing and nothing to worry about. The following causes of vaginal bleeding during the first trimester of pregnancy:- Someone who thinks menstruation but is pregnant may be caused by implantation bleeding. This usually occurs around 10-14 days after conception. Generally, this situation is nothing to worry about and will stop on its own.
- In the first trimester of pregnancy, vaginal bleeding can be caused by miscarriage or spontaneous loss of the fetus before the age of five months. Another possible cause is a problem in the cervix of a pregnant woman, such as an infection or inflammation.
- Another cause of menstruation but pregnancy in the first trimester is an ectopic pregnancy, aka pregnancy outside the uterus. In addition, there is also a suspicion due to wine pregnancy, namely the presence of an abnormal mass that is not a fetus, but grows in the uterus after fertilization.
- One common cause is cervical ectropion. The condition is associated with harmless changes in the cervix.
- It can also be caused by abruptio placenta, which is a serious condition in which the placenta detaches from the uterine wall.
- Another placental problem that can cause bleeding so misinterpreted as menstruation is placenta previa. This is the condition where all or part of the birth canal is blocked by the placenta that is too low in the uterus.
- Blood that comes out of the vagina and is often mistaken for menstruation, can also indicate a miscarriage. Fetal death in utero after 20 weeks of gestation is called intrauterine fetal death (IUFD).
- Bleeding in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy can be an early sign of labor. This condition is characterized by the discharge of mucus from the cervix which can form lumps or blood spots.
